People index
This is an index of (almost) all the people mentioned in the text of
this website. People in photos are listed separately, as are people in
the family trees. The index uses initials to refer to the pages and
family trees: these initials are listed on the left, in the same order
as their pages appear in the website.
A few points about the index:
- Historical persons are usually not listed (e.g. kings and queens),
unless they have a particular relevance to the text (e.g. John
Wesley).
- In the family trees, only the main name in each box is indexed.
- Women are listed by their 'birth surname', i.e. maiden name, with
a separate column ('Later') showing their married name. In a few
cases women who married more than once are also indexed under their
subsequent surnames (page mentions only).
- People who changed their names on taking a title are listed under
their original names, with the title shown in the 'Later' column.
- The column 'Gen.' indicates the generation of the person, which
should help 'place' him or her. See the Home
page for more details.
- Where families are connected by several marriage links, and
especially in 'long families' where many years separate eldest from
youngest children, cross-generational marriages occur. So for
example, three of Francis Johnstone's daughters (in Generation 4)
married three Haseler brothers (in Generation 3). This is indicated
in the 'Identifier'.
Appendix of photos
At some stage I hope there will be space here for extra photos, for
which there wasn't space on the main pages.
